Family fights for relative's body to be returned
VIDOR - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
A family is fighting to have their relative's body returned from South America.
Chris Caver's cousin, Nancy Jackson, tells KFDM News he was robbed and subsequently shot and killed after leaving a grocery store in Peru near his home September 1.
Theyve been told it will take 45-90 days for Cavers body to return to Southeast Texas.
Weve been told thats how Peru handles murder cases, that they will hold the body until they feel they have all the evidence they can get, Jackson said.
Doctors already conducted an autopsy. The family doesnt understand what more authorities need.
They say this is the latest news in a string of conflicting information.
Jackson says they were first told that in addition to being shot, Caver suffered a heart attack.
They were also told they had to pay several thousands of dollars to be examined. But before that, they didnt know where his body was.
For the longest time, we didnt know if his body was safe. We didnt even know if we had the possibility of getting him back, she said.
Since then, they have learned his body is in a morgue in Lima, Peru.
He belongs here, and we want him to come home, Jackson said.
The family is working with officials in the U.S. embassy to expedite the process.
