BPD: The department has investigated fewer child injury cases compared to last year
BEAUMONT - It's a 9-1-1 call that hits home for most Beaumont officers.
When police arrive at the scene of a child abuse case, many have to forget about their own children and focus on helping a child that's been traumatized or killed.
It seems like we've heard about child abuse cases each week for the past several weeks.
Beaumont police say so far this year, two children have died when their guardian rolled over on them while sleeping one just last week.
In a separate case, A one year old girl died Saturday at a hospital after detectives say the father injured the child the week before.
In 2012, three children died while sleeping with their guardians and one died from injuries he or she received.
So far this year, Beaumont police have investigated 53 cases where a parent or relative injured a child.
That number decreased by about half from the previous year.
Beaumont police and child protective services are working together to investigate each case of child abuse.
CPS says it's always proactive in handing out brochures explaining how to protect children from abuse.
So far this year, CPS has given out the pamphlets to employees at hospitals, apartment managers, churches and during weekend events.
Police say it's the job of adults to protect children.
Family services of southeast Texas offers parenting classes to help strengthen families and reduce the risk adults will abuse children.
