BISD board approves spending for election that may not happen
The Beaumont school board approved spending thousands of dollars for an election that might not happen.
Wednesday afternoon trustees debated buying software for the voting and hiring someone to oversee the November election.
But there are questions about whether BISD voters will even get a chance to go to the polls.
The BISD board voted to buy election equipment that will cost about $25,000. The board also approved hiring an election administrator. The district will also have to pay for poll workers.
Once the board finished its debate it voted five to two to move forward with the election with Mike Neil and Tom Neild opposing the decision.
One of the main reasons for their opposition is the question of whether the district has the legal right to proceed.
Under the election code the district must hold a joint election with the county including shared polling places.
One of the attorneys for BISD says he believes state law allows the district to hold a November board election on its own.
He says it's a lengthy process and BISD must begin now in order to have everything in place for November.
Some trustees believe voters will end up going to the polls others say it won't happen.
