Researcher presents findings relating to BISD
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
A researcher from the Houston area will present his findings about education as it relates to BISD tonight.
He argues that over the years the state has failed students and has made parents believe their children are doing better than they actually are.
One example from the report KFDM News has obtained:
For the algebra one end of course exam Scott found students needed to answer 20 correct answers out of 54 in order to pass that section, which is just 37%.
It's similar with the geometry section.
George Scott found students needed to answer just 18 questions correctly out of 52 in order to pass that section which is just under 35%.
Scott places the blame on the Texas Education Agency and the policies enacted tracing back to the desegregation of schools.
"The engineer of this train is the Texas Education Agency in the state of Texas," Scott said. "School districts role, I believe, is that they have not been forceful enough in communicating to their parents and to their constituents some of the nonsense that the state of Texas has imposed on them. But make no mistake about this. This train of deception has been driven by the Texas Education Agency for over 2 decades."
KFDM News spoke to Dr. Dwaine Augustine, the assistant superintendent for research, evaluation, and technology for the Beaumont school district.
He said he hadn't read the report yet, but plans to read it. He offered this:
"TEA bases standards on how kids are performing across the state, so that level is adjusted for the way kids perform as a whole across the state. TEA would be the one to address the standard as well as the difficulty," Augustine said.
