Motorola opens first US-assembled smartphone plant
FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Gov. Rick Perry and top executives have presided over the opening of a Fort Worth plant where Motorola will produce the first smartphone ever assembled in the U.S.
Motorola is owned by Google, whose Executive Chairman, Eric Schmidt, joined Perry at Tuesday's event.
Also in attendance was Dennis Woodside, CEO of Motorola, which will produce its new flagship device, Moto X, at the facility. Perry said 2,500 jobs will be created statewide.
The factory is run by Singapore-based Flextronics International Ltd., a contract electronics manufacturer with longtime ties to Motorola.
Perry administers two incentive funds to attract job-creating businesses to Texas. But Motorola didn't get money from those funds for this deal.
Perry said: "Flextronics and Motorola could have put this facility anywhere in the world, but they chose Texas."
