Relatives say shooter may have dealt with PTSD

BEAUMONT-By: Leslie Rangel

Investigators cannot confirm the suspect in the D.C. shootings was at ground zero to help rescue victims after the 9/11 attacks.

His father says he was. What's clear, according to those looking into his background.

Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old New York native suffered from mental health problems that went untreated for many years.

Law enforcement officers say Alexis shot and killed 12 and wounded several others Monday at the Washington Navy Yard.

Officers returned fire and killed him.

Investigators are searching for a motive.

They say Alexis was preoccupied with the September 11th attacks and may have worked near the World Trade Center when it was attacked.

They say he often talked about how it disturbed him.
Relatives and those looking for a motive, say that might be among a number of mental health problems Alexis struggled with for years.
A Beaumont Police Sergeant who helped first responders after 9/11, spoke with us about that life-changing event and its impact on mental health.
