Commissioners discuss proposed water park at Ford Park
JEFFERSON COUNTY - Jefferson County commissioners are considering a plan to help Southeast Texans cool off during the hot summer months.
Sources have confirmed to KFDM News that commissioners are exploring ways to bring a water park to Ford Park.
This isn't the first time community leaders have discussed bringing a water park to the area. Most recently, Beaumont City Councilman Michael Getz brought it up at a Beaumont City Council meeting. Council decided not to place it on a list of city projects requiring tax dollars.
Now the county is considering a water park. Once commissioners finished their public meeting Monday afternoon they went behind closed doors into executive session. According to the agenda, they discussed a business prospect sought to be located in Jefferson County with which the county is conducting economic development negotiations and/or to deliberate the offer of incentives.
KFDM News has since learned that business prospect involves a water park coming to Ford Park.
Reporter Justin Hinton asked County Judge Jeff Branick about the possibility. Branick said he couldn't comment because the discussion took place in executive session.
Justin asked: "Are you guys thinking about a water park or thinking about anything. Has that been discussed at all?"
Judge Branick answered: "I can't say anything right now. The only thing I can say to the extent we consider any project that has to do with any county facility, there's nothing budgeted in the budget to come from general revenue."
Branick also told us commissioners wouldn't consider spending additional tax dollars for any new project. Once again, commissioners didn't vote on whether to move forward with the water park. They behind closed doors to talk about possible incentives to lure a water park to Ford Park.
