Election identification certificates
Press Release from DPS:
The Highway Patrol Office in Beaumont has received several calls about the Election Identification Card and wondering if it was a sting to catch people with warrants. The Election Identification Certificate is another form of identification for Texas residents that do not have the proper identification to vote in elections in Texas. The following information should address the purpose of the Election Identification Certificate and who qualifies for the certificate.
The Texas Department of Public Safety began issuing Election Identification Certificates in early September. The Election Identification Certificate (EIC) is a form of identification for Texans in need of proper identification to vote in elections in Texas.
Applicants may apply for an EIC at all Texas driver license offices during regular business hours Monday-Friday. In addition, there are local county offices that are issuing the Election Identification Certificate.
Most residents already have an acceptable form of photo identification needed for voting and will not need or qualify for an EIC. If the applicant already has any of the following documents, they are not eligible to receive an EIC:
Texas driver license-unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting.
Texas identification card-unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting.
U.S. passport book or card-unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting.
Texas concealed handgun license-unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting.
U.S. Military identification with photo-unexpired or expired less than 60 days at the time of voting.
U.S. Citizenship Certificate or Certificate of Naturalization with photo
The EIC is free of charge to qualifying applicants and is valid for six years. There is no expiration date for an EIC for citizens 70 years of age or older. The EIC can only be used for the purpose of voting in an election and may not be used as personal identification.
