Peace officer academy moves to nights

JEFFERSON COUNTY - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

For the first time in ten years, the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office will host an evening peace officer academy, said Deputy Rod Carroll.

Carroll and other deputies say it gives a different crop of people the opportunity to become peace officers.

[I] spoke to a lot of people who wanted to go to the academy, said Detective Bryan Lopez. They said its kind of hard because were maintaining an 8-5 job, so its either, Do I take off time for work, or do I just not go to the academy.

He went to a night academy in the 90s. Working a full-time job, it was the only time he could go.

I went through a day time academy, so it was a little more difficult, said Deputy Chad Williamson. Luckily, I was able to have a job that was allowing me to work at night, but there again that still limits a lot of people because not many people can work at night.

The new course begins January 6 and costs $2,400.

The application deadline is October 25.

Applications can be picked up from the training division of the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office located at 5030 Highway 69S, Beaumont, TX 77705.
