Community rallies around Beaumont officer with leukemia

PORT ARTHUR - A community came together to support a Beaumont police officer battling cancer.

Officer Ty Smith was diagnosed with leukemia.

The Southeast Texas Jeepers and Mid County Chrysler held a link and drink sale to help him with medical expenses,

Organizers say Smith gives so much to the community and today was an opportunity for the community to give back.

Officer Smiths wife says her family is grateful for the support.

It means everything to us. Having all the family, friends, coworkers, some people we've never even met before, they're coming out to support Ty and it's amazing. It really is. We're truly blessed."

Smith is undergoing treatment at M.D. Anderson in Houston.
