Volleyball team washes cars to fight breast cancer
LUMBERTON- by Haley Bull
The Lumberton Middle School volleyball team held a car wash to raise money for the Julie Roger's Gift of Life Program Saturday. Even a rainy day could not stop the team from taking on a new competitor, breast cancer.
"We're helping people out there who have cancer and helping find a cure," team members Skye Ball said.
It's a cause that hits home for one player.
"My grandma has had it before and still has it," Bailey Smith said.
"We just kind of focus on the good and enjoy what we've got now and take it day by day," Smith's mom, Angelique Smith, said.
She said the team is learning a lesson through fundraising and washing cars.
"I think they're learning that you have to be, you have to take precautions and know your body and know what's going on, and be proactive if you will," Smith said.
The team is competing to raise the most money so they can play school faculty in a volleyball game. The car wash is just one event in their fundraising campaign.
"It doesn't matter what you do, hard work pays off and in the end you're rewarded by the, the good work that you've done," Smith said. "It doesn't mean that this one raised this much money. It's the good work, the hard work that you did to get to the final product."
The volleyball team will host fundraisers at local restaurants and a 'pink-out' game Nov. 4th.
