Hardin County JP arraigns woman accuased of beating 78-year-old woman

A Hardin County justice of the peace has arraigned a 23-year-old woman who investigators say used a cane to beat a 78 year old woman.

Justice of the peace TJ Hall set a $250,000 bond for Jessica Scates.

Scates is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.  The deadly weapon is the cane.

The victim, 78 year old Ruby Cravey is in the intensive care unit at a Beaumont hospital. She has 14 cuts and bruises and doctors have performed two surgeries on her elbow.

Hardin county deputies arrested 23 year old Jessica Scates Monday afternoon and transported her to the Hardin Coutny Jail.

Investigators say Saturday night Scates knocked on the front door of Cravey's home.  Scates said she had been beaten and needed to use the phone.

Cravey allowed Scates to spend the night and wait for a ride at the woman's home located in the 1100 block of Rusty Eddings Road north of Silsbee

Cravey confirmed to investigators it was Scates who beat her with her own cane and left her to die.

Scates has not bonded out of jail.  Her bond is $250,000.
