2 arrested at Hike and Bike trail; Car burglary spree
BEAUMONT-By: Leslie Rangel
Beaumont police arrested two Florida men after officers say they went on a car burglary spree here in Beaumont.
Police were initially called out to the Amelia little league baseball fields, that's when things took a turn and they were told the men were headed to toward the Hike and Bike Trail.
Police cars filled the Phelan entrance to the Hike and Bike Trail, not normally the case on a Sunday afternoon.
"I see this and just wondering what was going on, just wondering why there are three police cars out here and one car being searched and just a little concerned about that," Ian Cabanlet says.
What Cabanlet didn't know, was he and his son, Jack walked right into an active crime scene.
"We usually come at a time like this, plenty light, plenty cars, plenty people around," Cabanlet says.
Police say that didn't scare away the suspects. They were on a car burglary spree and hit at least four cars.
"I got here I seen a vehicle that matched the description and when I got out of my car, there was one subject that was getting in the side of the gray Honda right here," Officer Christopher Spears with the Beaumont Police Department says.
Police say it didn't stop there. They issued an officer distress call because the suspects were not cooperating.
They used a sun visor to keep police from looking into their Yukon.
"We don't know what's inside the vehicle, the vehicle is very dark, I mean these guys are doing bad things, so they're not good people by any means," Officer Spears said.
Police were finally able to arrest the suspects.
Officers say the men had taken purses that were visible to from outside the vehicles.
"If they see something they want, they're going to try their best to get it," Ofc. Spears says.
Items that caught these burglars eyes and left bystanders a little shaken up.
"Well, it makes you wonder, any place could be possible place for I guess crooks, it just makes you wonder what place is safe," Cabanlet said.
Sergeants on scene say the suspects are also accused of trying to run over a woman who tried to stop them from taking her things.
