Reece out, Ambres in as BISD board president

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Trustees voted Thursday night to make Gwen Ambres board president, replacing Woodrow Reece, who previously held the seat.

"We passed a bond, we worked a bond, money left over. We made so many different changes. We got a superintendent from within instead of outdoors that they didn't know us here, so I've done a lot of marvelous things. People tell me all the time," said Reece.

Janice Brassard remains as board vice president. Terry Williams also remains as board secretary.

The vote to make Ambres  board president was 4-3. Gwen Ambres, Zenobia Bush, Terry Williams and Janice Brassard voted for Ambres as board president.

Woodrow Reece, Tom Neild and Mike Neil voted for Reece to continue as board president.

Usually, a reorganization of board offices happens after an election, however, with no election date set, a majority of board members felt it was time for new leadership.

"Going forward, we want to emphasize more student achievement, what our teachers are doing right in the schools," said new president Gwen Ambres. "We want to become more of a progressive board ad engage and reach across to the public."

The board also voted to authorize the attorney and map specialist to begin work on a 5-2 election map.
