Kountze police arrest convenience store robber
KOUNTZE by Lauren Huet
A man robbed a convenience store in Kountze at 2 a.m. Wednesday. The clerk working that night called the store manager after the robber left.
The Tejas Convenience Store manager, Vinay Lakhwan, explained what the employee told him.
"At night he was just sitting over there, and the guy just walked from that door, come inside and he just showed the gun, said Lakhwan.
Surveillance video footage shows the robber entering the store, walking to the register, pulling out a gun and pointing it at the clerk. He ordered the clerk to give him the money in the register.
"Within a minute, less than 58 seconds, said Corporal Randy Erwin with the Kountze Police Department, he was in the store and out of the store with the cash. And he got approximately 900 something dollars, almost a thousand dollars in cash."
Both the manager and the clerk recognize the robber.
"Actually he's a regular customer, said Lakhwan. Ya, he comes all the time over here.
While police searched for the robber, they served a warrant on a man they believe to be tied to a string of burglaries in the area.
"In the last couple months we've had a series, a run of burglaries, said Erwin. We had a warrant for this individual's arrest, and we had a tip that he was in the area on foot, and we responded."
Police chased the man through the woods and a neighborhood, caught him, and arrested him.
"The one that was involved in the robbery is connected with several other robberies [and] thefts, said Erwin, And also the one we apprehended today was involved in some theft and burglaries of a building and such.
Police hoped the man they arrested after the foot chase would help lead them to the convenience store robber, who they caught Wednesday evening. Police also found a gun in his possession and hundreds of dollars.
The Tejas Convenience Store manager hopes people don't follow in the robbers footsteps.
"Please guys, don't do this kind of stuff, you know like, everyone's working hard for their money, so please, I just request you, stop all this. Please, please, said Lakhwan.
