The Texas Department of Public Safety says a school bus driver with the Kirbyville Consolidated Independent School District was arrested late Tuesday afternoon and later charged with driving while intoxicated following a school bus accident.
According to Trooper Stephanie Davis, the accident occurred shortly after 4:00 on Farm to Market Road 1013, when the school bus went off the highway and landed in a ditch. Davis said only the driver was onboard, and all of the children on the bus had already been dropped off.
Davis said the driver, 47-year-old Angel Shepherd Tharp, of Kirbyville, was transported by ambulance to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital where a blood sample was taken. Davis said Trooper Shanna Neal investigated the accident, and while interviewing Tharp in the hospital emergency room, Neal began to suspect that Tharp was intoxicated with an alcoholic beverage. Trooper Davis also pointed out that the possible presence of other substances has not been ruled out.
According to Davis, Tharp was arrested and transported to the Jasper County Jail, where she later appeared before Justice of the Peace Steve Connor and was officially charged with driving while intoxicated-first offense. Bond on Tharp was set at $1,000.00, and she was later released after making arrangements to post bond.
