New details about accidental shooting in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY - Law enforcement officers are releasing the name of a man who was shot when a gun jammed while he was trying to clean it.

On Monday, October 21, 2013, at about 6:30 p.m., the Orange County Sheriffs Office responded to a reporting accidental shooting in the 1800 block of Erin Drive in Vidor.

Deputies say Keith Thomas, 27, told them he was cleaning a .22 caliber revolver when the cylinder jammed. When he could not clear the jam, he handed the revolver to his father who attempted to clear the jam. According to both men, the handgun went off while in the fathers hand and the bullet struck the 27 year old man in the thigh.

First responders from Acadian Ambulance transported the man to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont for a non-life threatening injury.

Based on the statements of the witnesses and evidence gathered at the scene, investigators say it appears the shooting incident was accidental.
