BISD board to discuss proposal to reduce amount of time for public comments
When you state your name and step up to the microphone at Beaumont school board meetings you may soon have to talk faster or cut down on your comments to say what you need to say.
During Thursday night's meeting the board will discuss a proposal to reduce the amount of time people can speak during the public comment portion from three and a half minutes to two and a half.
The total amount of time for public comments would drop from 45 to 30 minutes.
Board president Woodrow Reese told KFDM News a policy committee of trustees not including him came up with the proposal during a review of all board policies.
The goal, he says, is to find more efficient and effective ways of conducting meetings.
One trustee told KFDM News it's a bad idea.
The board will not take a final vote on the proposal Thursday.
The board is also scheduled to talk about a resolution allowing the board president or presiding officer to ask law enforcement officers for help in removing someone from a board meeting if that person causes a disruption.
According to the resolution a small but volatile group of people is increasingly disrupting meetings with the obvious goal of doing so.
