Staff revives BISD custodian

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Blanchette Elementary custodian, Gary Francis, finished eating lunch and started installing a fish tank in a science lab when he went into sudden cardiac arrest the Thursday before the school year started.

I remember heading this way, but I dont remember when I got here and then what happened when I was here, Francis said.

First year Beaumont Independent School District Teacher, Joyce Booker was in the classroom when it happened.

She was working on her computer when she noticed something was off.

All of a sudden, he said, Oh, and I looked up and he was falling backwards, and his head hit the corner of the table and he collapsed on the floor, Booker said.

She said minutes before, the two were carrying on a conversation.

When he collapsed, she ran out the door to get help from a nearby custodian. He went to the front office while Booker went back to care for Francis.

The school nurse came with an AED while the principal called 911.

The nurse was able to shock his heart, but two more times, it stopped.

Once here, I believe [my doctor] said once in the ambulance, and once in the hospital, Francis said.

The doctors havent cleared Francis to return to work yet, but he visits every so often.

I miss all of this, he said. I aint gone tell nobody I dont miss it, cause I do.

Just knowing that he is alive means just a great deal to us, said Principal Barbara Hardeman.

She says without the help of everyone working together, chances are, Francis might have died.
