Family of woman police say was beat with a cane says she is determined to get well
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
The family of a 78-year-old woman whom police say was beaten by a cane says she remembers the entire incident.
She was telling me exactly how it happened, said her daughter Crickett McDurmond. When it happened. Everything. She was alert and she was telling me what this girl did to her.
McDurmond and two of Craveys granddaughters say Ruby Cravey told them Jessica Scates attacked her with more than just a cane.
My grandmother said she was hitting her with everything she could get her hands on and told her she was going to kill her, said Michele Shook, Craveys granddaughter.
Another granddaughter, Tristan Cravey, said, Just saying to her I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill you, I'm going to kill you. She said she remembers her asking where her guns were and grandma said I don't have any guns. I don't have them. And she kept saying, where are they at?
The three say Cravey suffered three concussions, a brain bleed, a crushed elbow, a partially collapsed lung, broken ribs and has a number of stitches and staples.
Despite all of that, they say when they visit her in the hospital, shes in high spirits.
It hasn't broke her down [sic]. She says she's going to be all right. She's going to get over this, said Shook.
Deputies arrested Jessica Scates Monday and charged her with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Her bond was set at $250,000.
