More middle, high schoolers smoking e-cigarettes

BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News

Overall tobacco use among middle and high school students last year is down while the same group of students shows an increase in the use of electronic cigarettes and hookah, according to a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The CDC says the decrease in tobacco use is mostly due to ta decline in teens smoking cigarettes.

Last year about 5.4 percent of high school students said they used hookahs at least once a month compared 4.1 percent in 2011.

Also, 2.8 percent said they tried electronic cigarettes in 2012 compared to 1.5 percent in 2011.

I think as business owners, its our responsibility to make sure the younger age people do not get access to it, said Hassan Ulhaque, manager of Smoke Shack in Beaumont. If youre not 18, you cant even come in the store.

Ulhaque says his family has owned the smoke shop for the past 3 years and noticed the increase in e-cigarettes about 5 years ago.

He says there serve a lot of good, including getting people to stop smoking, but shouldnt be used by minors.

I mean, I have a one-year-old son, so I want to make sure hes not getting access to anything thats bad for him, he said.
