Investigators say brother, sister were in stolen car while fleeing police, died in crash

Investigators in Jasper say a brother and sister were in a stolen car when they tried to get away from officers and died in a fiery crash.

According to the Jasper police chief, the late model Ford Mustang had been taken from someone in Houston.

James Taylor, a 19-year-old, was driving. His 17-year-old sister Shelby was riding in the back seat.

Investigators say a trooper tried to pull them over for a traffic violation but the driver took off on a chase that spanned roads, intersections, and city blocks.

The driver ran a red light at Milam Street and Highway 96 which forced a man driving a Dodge pickup to crash into the Mustang.

Both vehicles crashed into parked cars at a dealership. The Mustang caught fire.

Paramedics transported both men in the truck to Christus Jasper Memorial Hospital.

Both teens died at the scene. A front-seat passenger in their car, a 34-year-old man from Jasper, was treated and released from the hospital.

Investigators say the brother and sister were on the way to funeral in Louisiana and stopped in Jasper to spend the night.
