Deacon opens fire on car thief in church parking lot

FORT BEND COUNTY, Texas by Andrew Horansky/KHOU 11 News and

An off-duty deputy who also serves as a deacon opened fire on a man who was breaking into cars outside a Fort Bend County church overnight, officials said.

It happened as the deacon and several other church members were cleaning inside the Living Word Faith Center on W. Fuqua near Fondren late Tuesday night.

Officials said a parishioner went outside and spotted someone breaking into their cars. The deacon, who is a deputy for the Harris County Sheriffs Office, also went outside and saw the suspect.

The deacon said the suspect ran and got something out of his car. The deacon, fearing for his life, fired five or six shots at the man who then ran away on foot.

There were several backpacks recovered, said Thomas Gilliland with the Harris County Sheriffs Office. It looked like this individual had been breaking into several vehicles. Also the deputys own truck had been broken into.

Its believed the suspect was uninjured, but the vehicle he left behind may lead to an arrest.
