Son describes finding his father shot

NEDERLAND- by Haley Bull

Police are looking for a gunman on the run. Investigators say a man walked into a liquor store on Twin City Highway, pulled his gun out and shot the store owner, Sam Thobani, 52. Thobani's son said he was the first one to find his father covered in blood.

"I would never expect anything like that to happen," Sahil Thobani, 18, said.

It's the last sight any son expects to see.

"My dad's a great guy. He's a hardworking guy," Thobani said.

When he walked into Twin City liquors early Saturday night, he found his shot father.

"I was just going to check up on my dad and whenever I got there I saw my dad. He had blood all over his hands and he was holding the phone to call 911," Thobani said. "I guess it was thanks to God that I came on time because there was no one there."

Sunday the liquor store remain closed, no sign on the terror a son said his dad went through.

In a surveillance video of the store, a man walks in about 8:30 p.m. Saturday holding a gun. The man shoots the store owner, Thobani's father, in his right shoulder. The store owner then opens the register, the gunman reaches across, grabs cash and runs.

"My dad was lucky. The bullet went through his bone but it didn't do any other damage," Thobani said.

The store owner's son said not even a bullet would stop his father from running the liquor store.

"He's going to open it again because you can't escape from criminals, there are criminals everywhere and we'll just hope for the best and be more careful next time," Thobani said.

Thobani said they will add more security to the store and that his father underwent surgery at Christus Hospital St.Elizabeth Sunday.

Police describe the suspect as a 25-35 year old white male, around 6 ft. tall and weighing 175-185 lb. He was wearing a camouflage hoodie, dark pants and black gloves. Police said he has a sandy colored mustache and possibly a slight beard. If you have any information, call the Nederland Police Department  at  722-4965.
