Son of Beaumont city councilman escapes house fire, helps grandfather get to safety

The son of a Beaumont city councilman escaped from a fire that began in his bedroom and the child helped his grandfather get to safety.

The son of councilman Jamie Smith called 9-1-1 to report the fire at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday last night at the family's home in the 4400 block of Roberts Avenue. The councilman and his wife were away.

Investigators say the fire started in the child's bedroom near the bed.

It heavily damaged the bedroom and a bathroom and there was fire and smoke damage to other parts of the home.

Firefighters say the fire was accidental.

Smith believes it may have started with an electronic device on the floor near the child's bed.
