Help signing up for health insurance
PORT ARTHUR- by Haley Bull
Southea;st Texans in need of health insurance got an extra hand signing up for the Affordable Care Act Saturday. Enroll America, state Rep. Joe Deshotel and a Port Arthur school principal hosted a sign up event at the Memorial Ninth Grade Academy in Port Arthur.
Federally certified workers guided people looking for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act through online, telephone and paper sign-ups. They were on hand to answer questions about the process.
"Insurance is very complicated and for people who've never had it, it can be very intimidating," Mario Castillo, a regional organizer for the Gulf Coast region for Enroll America, said. "We want to make sure that people can feel safe to ask the questions, can get help with walking them through the process so they can end up, you know, getting affordable quality healthcare."
State Rep. Joe Deshotel said about 27 percent of people in Jefferson County are uninsured. There will be a similar event in Beaumont in December.
