Southeast Texas students learn the importance of not texting and driving
KFDM News - We're aware of the dangers of texting and driving, but it's always good to be reminded.
The Texas Department of Transportation brought distracted driving simulators to Nederland and P-NG High School.
The crashes are virtual, so the roads where the students are texting and driving and putting themselves and others in a dangerous situation exist only on a TV screen in front of them.
AT&T donated the simulators to TxDOT to bring awareness of how deadly texting and driving can be.
Sending or reading a text takes a driver's eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds.
At 55 mph, that's the equivalent of driving the length of a football field while blind.
