VIDEO ONLY: Scene of fatal hit and run auto-pedestrian accident
BEAUMONT - Beaumont Police are investigating a fatal hit and run auto-pedestrian accident that blocked part of the Highway 69 access road near Parkdale Mall.
Beaumont Fire dispatch tells KFDM at about 5:30 a.m. Friday an officer found the body of a man who appeared to have been walking south on the Eastex Freeway service road between Odom and Treadway, near Mazzio's Pizza, close to Lucas, when a driver struck the man and left the scene.
Investigators tell us based on the debris at the scene, it was a dark vehicle that struck the man. They don't know the make or model. They hope surveillance video from cameras on nearby businesses provides information about the vehicle and driver.
Paramedics and other first responders tried to help the victim but he was dead at the scene. His body was on a grassy area near a utility pole not far from the road. Justice of the Peace Nancy Beaulieu pronounced him dead.
Police blocked the intersection while first responders investigated the fatal accident but they had cleared the area within an hour.
Officers aren't releasing the man's name until they notify relatives.
Shortly before officers left the scene they worked a separate, minor two-car wreck on the freeway, near the fatal auto-pedestrian accident. They say it was caused by a driver who may have been looking at the first responders at the fatality scene.
From Beaumont Police Department:
At about 5:30 this morning, a patrol officer found the body of a man along the west service road of the 5000 block of Eastex Freeway. The man appeared to have been struck by a vehicle.
At this early point of the investigation, officers are collecting physical evidence found at the scene and are interviewing potential witnesses. They are also in the process of determining if video surveillance cameras from adjacent businesses may have captured any images that can lead to the identity of the vehicle that struck the man.
Investigators are asking all businesses in the area with surveillance cameras to contact the Traffic Unit at 980-7271 or our Department Communications Center at 832-1234. We are also asking any person who may have witnessed this incident to call those same numbers. You may also leave an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at 833-TIPS. If your tip provides information that leads to the identity of the vehicle or person responsible for this fatal hit and run then you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
Traffic Unit Investigators are still working to identify the victim and to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. Judge Nancy Beaulieu has ordered an autopsy, which is to be performed later this morning.
