Weak front just south of I-10 with little change in temperature. Look for areas of fog tonight especially south of the boundary. Otherwise look for highs in the 80's and lows in the 60's the next several days and nights. Next upper disturbance will pass north of the area late Thursday with once again the best dynamics north of SE Texas. ...
Robber almost steals Christmas
GROVES- by Haley Bull
A robber almost became a Christmas Grinch after he tried to steal a 64-year old woman's purse. When the 19-year old suspect tried to take the purse, he probably didn't realize he was going to steal her Christmas shopping money. When the woman's husband chased the suspect down, it was about saving more than just the bag.
"Once he brought it in I started putting my lights in, on it and putting all my decorations on it," Marilyn Gautreaux said showing her decorated Christmas tree.
"I like decorations and you know, Christmas, because you know it's a good holiday," she said. The Gautreaux's are getting ready to celebrate the holiday with their 15 grandchildren.
They almost lost the holiday after an ordinary fill-up at a Super Stop in Groves took an unexpected turn Tuesday.
"Here comes this man in this black truck driving I mean, he was just like he was on the freeway, ran the stop sign," Gautreaux said.
The man pulled into the gas station.
"That's when I rolled my window down and I said, sir, do you have a problem," she said.
Gautreaux knew something wasn't right.
"When he had his hand and his head in my door he reached and said I'll take your purse. I'll take your purse," she said.
That's when she called for her husband.
"I got out quickly when he done that and I said Roland, I said he took my purse. And Roland went after him," Gautreaux said.
Her husband was determined not to let the thief get away.
"I looked, the man was running with her purse. Said man I gotta do something because that's her Christmas money," Roland Gautreaux said.
He took off after the suspect.
"I went and I attacked the man you know," Gautreaux said. "And they had some other men come help me."
The suspect eventually dropped the purse and ran. What the couple didn't realize at the time was the suspect was driving a vehicle stolen earlier Tuesday morning from a Port Arthur business, according to Groves Police.
Armando Reyes Silva-Chavira escaped into a neighborhood close by before Groves Police arrested him for robbery.
The suspect took a car, a purse and almost a Christmas.
"If he would've got that money that would've been ruined," Roland Gautreaux said. "You know that would've been real disappointing. So I had to get the purse and our Christmas money back."
The stolen truck will be returned to the owner and the couple is looking forward to celebrating the holiday.
