Cracking down on illegal handicapped parking
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
Volunteers with the Citizens in Action program, sponsored by the Beaumont Police Department, go around to different locations in Beaumont citing individuals who park in handicap parking spaces illegally.
We have to take a picture of the sign and their license plate number and get a straight shot in so that we can pick up both the license plate and the sign to verify that theyre parked illegally, said Gary Taylor, one of the volunteers.
Taylor has been with the program for a little more than a year.
He says during his time, he averages about 5-6 citations every time he goes out, but 13 citations were the most hes ever given in one two-hour shift.
A lot of those were around the hospitals and you would not think people would park in the handicap parking spaces and abuse that privilege, he said.
Under the Citizens in Action program, volunteers like Taylor are allowed to go throughout the city, citing people for parking violations.
Each parking lot, according to the number of spaces, is allotted so many handicap parking spaces, said Carolyn Oster, another volunteer. They cant guarantee everybody a handicap space when they need it, but were trying to keep the ones they do have available for the ones who need it.
