Shoplifters caught on camera

NEDERLAND- by Haley Bull

Small business Saturday brought many customers to locally owned boutiques and shops, including The Classy Peacock on Boston Avenue in Nederland.

"We're really excited when we can promote the small businesses, the locally owned ones," owner Marcy Messer Hudson said.

It's one of the biggest days of the year for shops like The Classy Peacock, until the wrong customers enter the store.

"Unfortunately we had a few people that showed up and took advantage of the situation of having lots of guests in the store," Hudson said.

A surveillance video from the store's security camera Saturday shows two women entering the store.

"They took things, a lot of things," Hudson said. Jeans, jackets and children's clothes, Hudson said nearly $1,000 worth of merchandise.

Hudson reviewed the surveillance video Sunday.

"The first woman that came in, came in and immediately grabbed merchandise, rolled it up, stashed it in her purse," she said.

The video shows an employee greeting the two woman in the front of the store.

"She came back because the women ask her for a backpack, if we had a backpack. So she brings a backpack back to show the lady," Hudson said.

When the store clerk walks away, the video shows one of the women lifting up her shirt and stashing clothing near her chest.

"She had an accomplice with her that was in a pink shirt that was basically a lookout for her," Hudson said. "When an employee would come their direction she knew to stop stashing clothes."

The video shows the woman who stashed the clothes up her shirt turning to leave. The woman in pink grabs clothes. Both head out the door before the store clerk returns.

Investigators said they got the call around 4 p.m.  Police said the two women left in a brown or gold Chevrolet Impala.

Hudson said the store will offer a reward to anyone with information that leads to the arrest of the two women in the video.

"How can they put those clothes on their child or put them on themselves and look at themselves in the mirror and think they look nice?" Hudson said. "How can they feel that that looks nice knowing that they stole those things?"
