'Protest for Justice' rally in Alfred Wright case

BEAUMONT - People who are upset with the investigation into the death of Alfred Wright held a 'Protest for Justice' rally and march Saturday in downtown Beaumont.

Wright was last seen alive November 7 at a store near Hemphill. Relatives said Wright's truck broke down and witnesses said they saw him running from it toward town.

The Sabine County Sheriff's Office began searching for Wright. They spent several days and also received help from volunteers, family members and friends of Wright. The large-scale search ended after several days. Family and friends continued searching and found Wright's body November 25 near where he was last seen in Sabine County.

An autopsy ordered by Sabine County indicates he died from combined drug intoxication. The autopsy indicates cocaine, amphetamine and methamphetamine were found in his body. The cause of death is listed as accidental.

Family, friends and other demonstrators held a march Saturday, during which they carried a coffin containing a picture of Wright.

They held a rally at noon at the Jack Brooks federal building. Demonstrators said they're upset with the investigation conducted by the Sabine County Sheriff's Office and Texas Rangers. They want the FBI and Justice Department to take over the investigation. They also question the autopsy and ruling that Wright's death was accidental. The family ordered a private autopsy but it didn't determine a cause of death.
