Tom Rugg is Acting Criminal District Attorney in Jefferson County

A familiar face in county government tonight has taken over as acting criminal district attorney in Jefferson County.

Tom Rugg is the senior first assistant D.A. He assumed the top prosecutor's job by law because longtime D.A. Tom Maness retired before his term expired at the end of this year.

Rugg is also judge of county court at law number one and he's running for judge of the 58th district court.

Bob Wortham holds that job but he will step down to run in the Democratic primary for district attorney.

Rugg says he'll remain in place and make sure the D.A.'s office operates smoothly until the governor appoints someone to the interim position.

Perry Thomas is running in the Republican primary for district attorney he is a prosecutor in the D.A.'s office.
