Starvin Marvin's Reopens
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
Starvin Marvins, a popular Beaumont restaurant on 11th Street, is back open after the owner shut it down for six weeks due to a major plumbing leak. He says several health problems made it difficult to open the restaurant sooner.
I had some health problems that had me down already so I really couldn't deal with it at the time as fast as if I had been healthy, Marvin Atwood said.
The closure originated from a dishwater nozzle leak that flooded the kitchen.
Atwood used the time to make other upgrades, but his health slowed him down.
Doctors diagnosed him with Addisons disease, a disorder that causes the body to stop producing adrenaline, and both lung and kidney cancer in August 2012.
Right now, I'm going about 35 percent, 40 percent of what I'm capable of going, and some days I feel I've gone 110 percent, he said.
Atwood heads to Houston once a week for radiation. He says his cancer is in remission.
I usually can't eat, I'm nauseated, throwing up, usually a lot of blood, used to be a lot more blood before they fixed my lungs, he said.
Despite all of that, Atwood says hes lived a life with no regrets.
I'm a gambler. I put my money where my mouth is and I go for it. That's just the way I am and I've always been that way. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but we're always playing the game, Atwood said.
His duties are far from over though. To accommodate his health, he has reduced the number of hours worked from 10 to three, making sure that hes able to provide jobs for his employees.
God deals us all a card, or trials and tribulations and we have to step up to the plate and swing the bat. Evidently, there's still something for me to do because I'm still here, he said.
