Red Cross helping people displaced by fire

The Red Cross is helping 40 people who were displaced following a fire at an apartment complex.

Shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday night Beaumont firefighters responded to a fire at the Ashley Park apartment complex on the 3100 block of Eastex Freeway.

No one was injured but the power had to be shut off to 24 apartments because of fire damage.

Investigators say someone dropped a cigarette inside an apartment which caused some curtains to catch fire.

The fire was contained to that one apartment and an attic space directly above it..but four other apartments were damaged by smoke and water.
