One person dead following two vehicle accident

NEWTON COUNTY - One person is dead following a two vehicle accident that occurred at about 3: 10 p.m. Monday on Highway 87 near FM 2829 in Newton County, according to Trooper Stephanie Davis.

A 2004 Chevrolet truck was traveling north on Highway 87 and a 2012 Jeep SUV was traveling south on Highway 87, Davis said.

The driver of the 2004 Chevrolet crossed the center line into the southbound traffic lane and struck the 2012 Jeep, Davis said.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 75-year-old Cecil Williams of Call, was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Satterwhite, Davis said.

The driver of the 2012 Jeep, 50-year-old Cherie Trahan of Orange, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with unknown injuries and a passenger in the Jeep was not injured, Davis said.

All occupants were wearing seat belts.

Troopers are still investigating the reason why Williams crossed over the center diving line and further details will be released as they become available.
