Victim in fatal shooting identified

UPDATE: Detectives have identified the man killed in last night's shooting.

Police say the victim was 20-year-old Emanuel Burleigh of Beaumont, whose next of kin has been notified.

An autopsy is being performed Tuesday afternoon and preliminary results from that autopsy are not expected for two to four weeks, police said.

BEAUMONT - Beaumont Police are investigating the first homicide of 2014.

Investigators say at about 7:50 p.m. on January 6, Patrol Officers responded to a reported shooting victim in the 5600 block of Lancaster. Officers arrived and found a twenty-year-old Beaumont resident with an apparent gunshot wound to his upper body. Paramedics on the scene said the man was dead.

Officers located the suspect at the scene and he voluntarily accompanied Detectives to our Police Station to give a statement. Detectives also took statements from other witnesses at the scene.

Information is still preliminary, but at this point in the investigation, police say it appears the victim and suspect were acquaintances. According to witnesses, they had been involved in an altercation at another location earlier in the evening. The two parted after that altercation. After the first disturbance, the victim apparently showed up at the house in the 5600 block of Lancaster and confronted the suspect again. The disturbance became physical and the suspect produced a gun and fired it at the victim.

Justice of the Peace Nancy Beaulieu responded and ordered an autopsy, which will may be performed as early as Tuesday afternoon.

Police aren't releasing the identity of the victim until they've notified his next of kin.
