Some Other Place's goal is survival

BEAUMONT - by Lauren Huet

The Director of Some Other Place says the charity's goal for the new year is "to survive." Some Other Place has helped Beaumont's needy for more than 40 years, serving hot lunches at the soup kitchen, handing out clothing, and providing other services. Paula O'Neal, the charity's director, hopes the holiday spirit of giving continues all year long.

Sheila Lloyd enjoys the food at Some Other Place, but that's not all the organization has provided to her family during the past 15 years.

"Bills, clothing, anything that we possibly needed they were there to help us," said Lloyd.

Ernest Foster says Some Other Place helped him when he was homeless.

"I always like to thank the Lord for this place and these people, because they did feed me one time, anytime when I was hungry, you know. Now I'm pretty well, I got a house, a home, and place like that, but I been out here, you know," said Foster.

O'Neal says the organization's goal for 2014 is to maintain the services that help people like Foster and Lloyd.

"Well right now the goal is survival," said O'Neal. "Basically, we are just trying to stay afloat. Try to make sure that we're able to meet the needs of people that come to us. This is kind of a tough time of the year, grants are gone, donations are down."

Still, O'Neal says the organization will not cut programs.

"All of our programs are so essential to the clientele that we serve," said O'Neal. "So, no programs are going to be cut, it's just how much we're going to be able to help people may be reduced."

O'Neal says the more they receive, the more they can do.

"If people would just be mindful of the fact that the same people that they were concerned about during the holiday season still need help, and the help they need is more basic than a toy for a child, you know, a child needs school shoes," said O'Neal.

Some Other Place wants to fill the needs of the local community throughout the year.

"I love you all, Some Other Place," said Lloyd. "And thank you all. And the meal was wonderful."

Local donations fund all of the organization's food and clothing programs. If you'd like to donate to Some Other Place, you can donate by mailing your donation to 590 Center Street, Beaumont, Texas, 77701, you can drop your donation off, or you can donate through Paypal on Some Other Place's website: http://www.sopbmt.org
