Couple killed after shots fired outside church near Colmesneil
TYLER COUNTY - by Steve W Stewart/KJAS & Rayburn Broadcasting Company
The Tyler County Sheriff's Department says two people are dead, and deputies along with Texas Rangers are investigating after shots were fired in front of a church near Colmesneil early Saturday afternoon.
According to a statement issued late Saturday evening by Sheriff Bryan Weatherford, the crime occurred at about 12:25 in front of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church on Recreational Road 255.
Weatherford said 911 dispatchers received a report of shots fired and one person down. However, Weatherford said deputies arrived a short time later to discover that a husband and wife were both deceased, and the suspect had already fled the scene.
Weatherford said Nathan Bradley Maddox, 35, and his wife, Krystal Renee Maddox, 31, were both pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Sheriff Weatherford, the couple was at the church so that Nathan Maddox could comply with a court ordered supervised visit with his child. However, there's no word on what led up to the gunfire.
Weatherford said his deputies and Texas Rangers were busy late Saturday evening gathering evidence at the crime scene, along with interviewing witnesses, and persons of interest.
So far no arrests have been made, but Weatherford stressed that all leads are being followed.
Weatherford said more information will be released when it becomes available.
