Officials: Icy roads cause Newton County crashes

NEWTON COUNTY - Investigators are blaming icy highways for two accidents in Newton County early Thursday.

According to the Burkeville Fire Department, first responders were called to an accident on Highway 63 East near the Sabine River Bridge.

They discovered the driver of a pickup truck hit a patch of ice and  slammed into a tree. No one was injured.

Also, a Newton County deputy was responding to that accident when his patrol car hit a patch of ice and spun. The ordeal wrecked the patrol car, but the deputy wasn't injured.
