Woman gets suspended sentence, probation for falling asleep and leaving loaded gun in home where boy accidentally shot and killed himself

ORANGE COUNTY - A judge sentenced a woman to 2 years in prison but suspended the sentence and gave her four years probation and a $1,000 fine on a charge of endangering a child.

Prosecutors say Melissa Ringhardt, 19, was babysitting five-year-old John Allen Read last October in a home outside of Vidor when she left a loaded gun on a living room coffee table and took a nap. The gun wasn't hers. During that time the boy accidentally shot himself in the head and died.

According to previous reports, Ringhardt told investigators she was afraid to be in the home alone.
