Port Arthur man sentenced for impersonating firefighter

KFDM News - A judge has sentenced a Port Arthur man to a 25 years in prison for pretending to be a firefighter.

A jury convicted 58-year-old John Weatherly of impersonating a public servant.

Prosecutors say in October of 2011, he walked inside a Port Arthur convenience store and said he needed to check the electrical box because of a nearby wreck.

Weatherly was wearing a helmet, similar to a firefighter's and a raincoat that was made to look like a fireman's coat, according to investigators.

Investigators say he it in order to go behind the counter and steal Lottery tickets.

The clerk tried to stop him and a customer stepped in and held Weatherly until police showed up.

He has been previously convicted for drugs and assaulting a family member.
