Officers arrested a man accused of shooting and killing three siblings and injuring a fourth person Monday afternoon.
Joe Hawkins, 26, is accused of murdering Anthony Hawkins, 33, Darrell Hawkins, 34, and Reshowna Hawkins, 30. Relatives said the suspect is the brother of the three victims. He's also accused of shooting and wounding a 21-year old woman relatives said was his girlfriend. She is in stable condition with several gunshot wounds to her upper body.
Police and officers with the U.S. Marshall's Service arrested the suspect Monday afternoon at in a room at the Southwinds Motel in Groves. He gave up peacefully.
Officers drove the suspect to the Beaumont Police Department where detectives questioned him for at least a couple hours before they drove him to the Jefferson County Jail.
Police said Hawkins was booked into jail on a warrant for the aggravated assault of the 21-year old woman and has a bond set at $1 million.
Police said detectives are working on three capital murder warrants for the three shooting deaths.
The victims were shot Sunday afternoon outside their family's home on S. 4th St. in Beaumont. When officers got to the scene for a family disturbance call, they found the victims in the yard. Each had several gunshot wounds.
Monday afternoon, two crosses and spray paint investigators used marked the triple murder scene one day later.
"My daughter, she did heard the yelling and screaming and she went to the back door and she got the phone and called 911," Gloria Anderson said. She lives nearby. "I just imagine in my mind that a mother has to bury her three children and I don't know how she can do it."
Police said Anthony and Reshowna Hawkins died at the scene. First responders took Darrell Hawkins to a hospital where he died a short time later. A 21-year old woman police said is an acquaintance of the victims is in stable condition.
"This is three family members that I have lost," Krishara Bennett said. She's a cousin of the victims and lives across the street. "They were very outgoing, outspoken, very funny, would give you the shirt off their back if they could," Bennett said.
"Darrell, funny liked to joke, laugh. Tony, liked to play sports and you know, Danielle, she's just a loving mother for her kids," Kenine Holts, another cousin, said.
Dozens of people crowded the street Sunday, waiting until investigators took away the bodies, including Holts.
"It just took the lives of people that, you know what I'm saying, have a life to live for and have kids to raise you know," Holts said.
Leaving a community asking questions.
"Why, why, why this happen. That's the question, why," Holts said.
If Hawkins is charged and convicted of capital murder, he could face the death penalty.
