Chamber of Commerce explains call for BISD leadership change
BEAUMONT - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
A number of different entities have weighed in on the financial status of the Beaumont school district including the Chamber of Commerce who issued a letter calling for the resignation of Superintendent Dr. Timothy Chargois and the Board of Trustees.
Chairman Chuck Kalkbrenner says the two groups were working together but the preliminary report into the districts finances provided enough reason to want new leadership.
In order to change the image of the BISD, weve got to change leadership, Kalkbrenner said. It is evident that theyve let the community down.
Kalkbrenner says its not an indictment of those individuals but rather a way to allow a cohesive unit to move the district in a more positive direction.
He says an Aug. 2013 meeting between Dr. Chargois and the chamber was supposed to do that.
He says several chamber members offered their help to the district.
He says another meeting took place with Dr. Chargois and Bill Lenhart, an outside auditor, after the FBI raid of the Administration building and the homes of two former employees.
We actually felt positive about what was going on, that there was going to be controlled devices placed in their finances and they were going to look for a CFO that was a CPA, he said. Those were some things that the chamber had suggested, so we were positive about what was happening there.
He says the Texas Education Agencys preliminary finance report showed otherwise.
We felt that the image of BISD, the only way we could really come out of this was a change in leadership, Kalkbrenner said.
