Jury selected in Port Arthur teacher trial
JEFFERSON COUNTY - By Justin Hinton, KFDM News
A jury has been selected in the trial for Port Arthur teacher Ruby Gunner accused of pushing, hitting and choking an 11-year-old student in April 2013.
The students mother told KFDM in 2013 her son wasnt doing his work in class. Thats when Gunner threatened him.
She told him, well if you want to go to the program, then you're going to have to get through me, she said in 2013.
She says Gunner and her son have had problems in the past and she told her son to go to the office if there were ever any more.
And when he tried that, she struck him, she said. She punched him in the face. And he went to the ground, he got up and he tried to get away from her and out of the classroom.
At the time, Gunner maintained it was in self-defense.
The mother said her son never denied kicking Gunner.
I can't really get into talking about the facts in the press, but we look forward to our day in court, said Gunners attorney Paul Darrow. We're very happy with the jury that got picked and we look forward to presenting out defense."
Testimony is set to begin Tuesday at 9 a.m. in Judge John Stevens courtroom.
