Video shows what happened after UPS left package
BEAUMONT - by Lauren Huet
You might be surprised what happens at your house when you're gone. A Beaumont man found out by installing a high definition security camera next to his front door.
Martin Horak can watch his security footage from his phone live. That's how he knew a package had been dropped at his door Wednesday, even though he wasn't home. If he had kept watching, he would have seen much more.
A silver vehicle drove by as UPS delivered the box, then passed again after the UPS driver had left. The driver parked, and got out of the vehicle.
"Somebody just pulled up, and picked up the package, not even a minute after the UPS driver dropped the package," said Horak. "One thing, I believe she saw the package being dropped and she decided right there, I'm going to make the package mine."
When he got home, Horak searched for a package he expected to find on his front porch. When he couldn't find it, he checked the surveillance footage and called the police.
"Not just because of the contents of the package, but we are concerned about our privacy, our space being violated by someone just walking up and taking what's not theirs," said Horak.
UPS says package theft is an industry wide challenge, and although most thefts occur during the holidays, thefts also occur throughout the year.
"My wife said, hey I will feel safer if you put security cameras up. So, I picked a high definition security system, installed it in a couple hours, and here we are not even a week after I put the cameras up, I catch a package thief," said Horak.
Horak says, he's shocked the woman didn't appear to see the security camera, which is visible next to his door. He's also shocked by what happened.
"That doesn't make you feel good, but I've forgiven her, but at the same time this cannot be tolerated," said Horak.
Beaumont police say the case is under investigation.
"None of the theft is worth it when you think about it, whether it's a high dollar item or a five dollar roll of butterfingers," said Horak.
Someone could face serious criminal penalties for what was in this case, a box of white duct tape.
Police say Martin Horak has filed a police report. Horak says, because of the video, police have already identified a suspect.
"I will let everybody know, hey it's affordable. Get you a camera, put it at the front door, watch for your stuff," said Horak.
UPS says it has several delivery options to help prevent package theft. For more information, follow this link.
