Statement from YES Prep Southwest on drowning death

The Hardin County Sheriff's Office is investigating a drowning that occurred Tuesday at Village Creek State Park near Lumberton.

Terumah Terry Onoja Ams, 18, was part of a group of students from a Houston charter school spending their spring break performing volunteer work at Village Creek State Park, according to Lumberton police.

The students had taken a break to swim in the creek when one of the boys went under and didn't come back up.

Personnel with several Hardin County agencies searched the waters and a Texas game warden discovered the teen's body around 6 p.m.

Eric Newcomer, School Director of YES Prep Southwest, issued the following statement:

Terry brought so much joy and enthusiasm to everything and everybody he touched. He was a leader on our campusa kid with so much potential and dreams of one day becoming a doctor. Our community is devastated by this tragedy."
