Beaumont abortion clinic shuts down
BEAUMONT - Whole woman's health clinic in Beaumont, which provides women in the area with gynecological health and abortions, is closing their doors after Thursday.
The closing will reduce the number of abortion clinics in Texas to 24.
Amy Hagstrom Miller, president of the Whole Woman's Health, says they were forced to close their doors because of harsher abortion clinic restrictions passed by the legislature last year.
Miller says they would not be able to have admitting privileges to hospitals within a 30-mile radius.
Miller says the clinic tried time and again to apply for admitting privileges in both the Christus and Baptist hospitals but were not given applications.
She also said they did not have the budget to rebuild the clinic and to meet ambulatory surgical center standards.
Miller says it's an injustice to women who won't have safe abortion care available.
We also spoke with the director of pro-life group 40 Days for Life Eileen Romano.
She says she has dedicated her time and prayer for three years to help shut the clinic down. She calls this a victory.
The clinic performed its last abortions two weeks ago. This past Tuesday, the clinic saw its last patients.
Whole Women's Health will also close its last abortion clinic in the Rio Grande Valley in the city of McAllen.
