Attackers rob and shoot elderly couple
JASPER- by Haley Bull
Jasper County deputies are looking for three men who broke into a house and shot the elderly homeowners.
Investigators said the attackers went after Alma and Robert Shellhammer outside and inside their home, behind their water bottling plant north of Jasper. They've lived there for nearly 30 years.
"My dad's 75 and mom is 73, and these are cowards. These are cowards," Todd Shellhammer, the couple's son, said.
Shellhammer said his mother was preparing to take a bath late Wednesday night but the water didn't work.
"My dad went to check the well and that's how they ambushed him. 75 year old. Ambushed him," Shellhammer said.
Investigators said the attackers parked near the water bottling company and followed the trail to the house. The Jasper County Sheriff said they shot Robert Shellhammer in his hip in the front yard, dragged him back into the house, shot his wife in the ankle and left with guns and cash.
"She picked him up and laid him in the Tahoe and drove him to the hospital," Todd Shellhammer said.
"I know I've got two good people that's in the hospital right now and they worked their whole lives to save a little money to get ahead, they they had three thieves go up there at 10:30, 11 o'clock at night and stole it away from them," Jasper County Sheriff Mitchel Newman said.
The Sheriff has no doubt he'll catch them.
"Well they got my promise we're gonna see 'em. You know, we owe it to our people," Newman said.
"I could have found them both this morning, coming to work and I am very thankful to God that he took care of them," Shellhammer said.
The Sheriff said the attackers will face aggravated robbery charges. If convicted, they could face up to life in prison.
