Investigation into West Brook fight continues

BEAUMONT -  The attorney representing a Beaumont ISD officer who was placed on unpaid administrative leave says the reason is due to the officer being part-time.

An altercation between two students at West Brook High School on March 7th has gone viral on YouTube after a student's arm was broken.

The video shows the fight in front of the school and an officer intervening. Moments later, a second officer responds.

The video shows the officers struggling with the student to place him in handcuffs.

BISD police chief Clydell Duncan placed officer Stephen Rivers on unpaid administrative leave.

Duncan says the district is conducting an investigation that could take up to two weeks.

According to officer Rivers' attorney, the fact that officer Rivers has been placed on unpaid leave is a function of him being a part-time officer with BISD police department. Rivers' attorney says it does not imply any impropriety or wrongdoing on his part.

Rivers' attorney also said he believes there are additional facts that have not yet been divulged.

He said he anticipates that his client will be exonerated. He also said that it is not appropriate to comment further because the matter is still under investigation.
